For most employees, the idea of an unlimited vacation policy sounds more like “the impossible dream.” However, for a growing number of profitable businesses – especially small firms that need to attract and keep top talent – an unlimited vacation policy is part of a smart strategy that delivers measurable ROI.
This is because, as highlighted by TIME Magazine, an unlimited vacation policy is not truly limitless. In essence, it is a deal that employers strike with employees. The latter can take off as much time as they want, provided that they get their work done, and their boss signs off on the request. In this context, it is a classic win-win scenario. At least, it should be.
However, some businesses that have jumped on the unlimited vacation bus – and some employees who have happily found a seat – have not experienced all of the benefits and advantages. This is not because the policy itself is a bad idea. Rather, it is typically because businesses do not have the technology in place to make it work for both parties. And that is where a VoIP phone system makes a game-changing difference!
Below, we highlight the 3 key ways that a VoIP phone system supports an unlimited vacation policy:
A business VoIP phone system instantly positions employees to be more productive. For example, they can take advantage voicemail-to-email to save time and effort, rely on customized IVRs to route calls to the right team or unit, and the list of productivity-enhancing unified calling features goes on.
As a result of this major productivity boost, employees can confidently ensure that they are meeting (or exceeding!) expectations at all times – which, as noted, is the foundation that makes an unlimited vacation policy work in the first place.
The conventional idea of work-time and non-work time is that the former takes place in an office, while the latter takes place at home. However, technology has re-invented this configuration, and once again a VoIP phone system is leading the way.
This is because with VoIP, employees do not have to choose between “going into work” and “not working at all.” Rather, they can work remotely from a home office, and be just as productive as if they were in the corporate office.
Because of this, employees have much more support in achieving work-life balance – especially if they have young children at home, or are caregivers to a parent or elderly relative – which for employers, perhaps surprisingly translates into FEWER vacation requests and SHORTER vacations.
Why is this the case? Because employees who can work remotely part of the time are less stressed out and have more energy. They simply do not need as many vacations -- or as long a vacation -- as their counterparts who work in businesses that have not yet embraced a VoIP phone system, and as such cannot work remotely.
While the idea of lying on a hammock while typing away on a laptop is not what employees dream about when they think of a vacation, the fact remains that there are times when it makes sense for everyone – including employees – to temporarily plug back into work-mode while on vacation. After all, employees would much rather have a 30-minute conference call with a customer vs. end their vacation short because something urgent and time sensitive has erupted.
A VoIP phone system allows this to happen in a professional, effective and efficient manner. For example, employees can log into the system via their laptop, an app on their smartphone, or a desktop (such as in a hotel business center), and temporarily reconnect as if they were in the corporate. Once again, everyone wins.
