Best Invention of the Past 100 Years? Internet, Car, Cell Phone, VoIP?

9/19/2012- Votacall VoIP – Boston, Massachusetts- General Electric (GE) posted a question via social media about what people think is the best invention over the past 100 years. This made me think of all the things that were invented that make our life better today. There are thousands of things we would not want to live without, internet, cell phones, television, cars, computer...the list could go on and on without end. I may be biased but the telephone might be the greatest invention ever. No more need for pigeons bringing messages back to their coop, no more broadcasting over the radio or with smoke signals. We now have the ability to communicate via a direct phone, unbelievable.

There is an issue to my theory though, because I was going to say how VoIP was added to the phone invention to make it even that more important. But VoIP is an invention based of the internet. So could it be that the internet is the best invention, it has given us VoIP, a direct way to contact and has allowed us to search the web with direct access to loads of data. Therefore with the addition of VoIP I change my mind, the internet is the best invention of the past 100 years. Its incredible, the things we are able to accomplish these days. 200 years ago our ancestors were limited to the things they could build with their hands, and calculate with their heads. If they were not up to the challenge and were not persistent then they would not succeed.

The same could be said for the people who invented the tools we love and sometimes take for granted today. The company I work for has benefited off being an innovator with VoIP. The technology has allowed us to let customers utilize the tools we have grown to love. As an advantage for the VoIP invention, we are able to offer it at a cheap price, far cheaper than the old telephone systems that were invented back in the day.

In the end, there is no reason to choose one invention over the other. Everyone works with each other and lets us the live the lives we have grown to love. Each prior invention allows for a new development, the PBX system allows for phones and the internet allows us to combine the two into VoIP. I will be interested to see if in 10 years VoIP is what everyone is using. If this is the case, I will look back on this blog and smile, realizing Votacall was able to see the future of Telecom and inventions.
